As he often did, Michael Schimpke was lecturing a group of journalists; the subject, on a beautiful early morning in Malaga, Spain, was the distinctive BMW look. Using one of the several then-new E36 3 Series coupes we were there to test drive as his classroom chalkboard, the Munich public relations manager-turned-professor was in rare form. On June 1, 2012 Karim Habib became the Director of Design at BMW under the company’s vice-president Adrian van Hooydonk. The materials selected and manufacturing processes increase body rigidity and crash safety while keeping weight as low as possible.

The aerodynamic elements for the front end, rear end, underbody and wheel areas alone add over 40 miles (WLTP measurement) to the car’s overall range. Some 16 miles (WLTP measurement) of this can be attributed to the third-generation active air flap control at the front of the vehicle, which directs cooling air to the drive units and brake system when required. Capitalizing on the benefits provided by the all-electric drivetrain and implementing proven measures from the past serves to optimize the aerodynamic properties of the BMW iX, which in turn has a positive impact on both its performance and range. The low aerodynamic drag can be attributed to not only the streamlined body, the tapered glasshouse, flush-fitting door handles, extremely slender exterior mirrors and precisely designed aerodynamic aids, but also to a host of other careful design measures. As a result, the BMW iX boasts outstanding aerodynamics for its class, with a drag coefficient (Cd) of just 0.25. For example, the distance measurement sensors are integrated inconspicuously into the black body edging at the front and rear of the car.
Deconstructivism: Bangle era 2001 – 2010, cars as art, accent on emotion, seeking to surprise
Four built-in speakers in the rear head restraints complement five midrange and five tweeter speakers. Two central bass speakers and two additional subwoofers located under the rear seat ensure a powerful sound performance. The system’s tweeters are housed behind perforated grilles, while the midrange speakers are hidden beneath the door panels’ fabric trim. Bangle’s designs, often described as “polarizing,” have created a firestorm of controversy. There’s an even more pronounced departure in the rear, where the styling looks like it might have come from one of the major Japanese studios.

Meanwhile, Holger Hampf delves into the emotional creative work of both BMW and Designworks, the BMW Group’s design studio, which also works for external clients. This background allows him to emphasize the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. This mission aims not only to create visually appealing products but also to make them intuitive to use. The Vision vehicles on display at the exhibition are trailblazers for bold, positive change. Design at BMW transcends the mere creation of vehicles; they craft experiences that deeply resonate with users while also addressing complex societal challenges, such as circular mobility.

The charging port is located in the same place as the fuel filler neck on conventionally powered BMW models – behind a flap on the right-rear wheel arch. The BMW iX is the first model based on a new, modular, scalable architecture on which the future of the BMW Group will be built. Conceived from the outset as purely electric mobility, the iX sees BMW redefining the successful Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) concept. The BMW Concept CS is the vision for a four-door car that unites the prestige of a luxury Gran Turismo with the fascinating allure of a high-performance sports car. Highly expressive design, the most select materials and a build quality that strives for perfection are all testimony to BMW’s perception of premium quality.

Central to this was the design talk, called ‘Design as Accelerator for Change’, livestreamed on designboom. Moderated by journalist Eva Steidl, Alice Rawsthorn, Design Critic and co-author of Design Emergency, and Holger Hampf, Head of BMW Group Designworks, underscore the transformative power of design in addressing complex social, ecological, and political challenges. They both emphasize the need for interdisciplinary collaboration, user-centric approaches, and the importance of radical thinking.
The big wraparound tail lamps, for instance, could have been lifted directly from the Acura RL sedan. At the 1933 Geneva auto show, BMW officially introduced the kidney grille on the new 303, powered by the company’s first six-cylinder engine, a 30-horsepower, 1.2-liter unit. Ironically, given the company’s current reputation for building the best inline sixes in the world, it is the smallest engine of its kind in automotive history. Engineer Fritz Fiedler, poached from Horch, designed the car’s tubular chassis and its body.

Spanning the largest area between the front and rear axle is the smooth aluminum casing of the high-voltage battery, which is located low down in the vehicle floor. At the front end, streamlined elements direct the oncoming air past the wheels to prevent adverse turbulence. Airflow along the rear is smoothed by the large rear axle cover and the rear bumper’s diffuser. Overall, the aerodynamics measures for the underbody of the BMW iX account for around 6 miles (WLTP measurement) of its long range. In normal driving situations, both the BMW kidney grille and the air intakes at the bottom of the front bumper are completely sealed off. This default setting allows the air to flow around the vehicle unhindered, significantly reducing aerodynamic drag.

Instead of conventional buttons, a control surface with active haptic inputs subdivided by feeler bars is used to select the iDrive menus, driving modes and other functions. The controller is designed with a glass-effect finish is surrounded by a Gold Bronze bezel. Nestled between the Start/Stop button and the button for the electromechanical parking brake is a newly devised rocker switch that takes the place of the customary gear selector lever. The instrument panel’s geometry rises up towards the front, turning it into a stage for the futuristic, fully digital screen grouping in the iX.
This concept is the definitive sports car for connoisseurs of beauty with a penchant for luxury and groundbreaking technology. It symbolises the BMW design team’s driving passion for aesthetic style paired with dynamic performance. The design brings together sportiness and elegance with muscular proportions and precise lines that convey a sense of formidable acceleration even before a wheel is turned. The BMW Concept 4 Series Coupé symbolises extra sportiness and exclusiveness, thereby clearly distinguishing itself from its 3 Series sibling. The most eye-catching feature of the car’s nose beyond the familiar BMW double-kidney grille and twin circular headlights is the large air intake in the front apron.
The bond between elegant lightness and powerful dynamism is the defining element of the four-seater CS1 convertible study’s design. A broad shoulderline, curving side sills and imposing wheels clearly announce its performance abilities and sturdiness. The concept study showcases BMW’s vision for a unique vehicle concept that builds on the distinctive design idiom of the BMW X models while training the spotlight firmly on sportiness and an elegant presence. Rather than relying on large clay sculpting and milling machines, the studio now relies on digital tools.
The midrange units in the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System are installed underneath the fabric door panel trim. The tweeters feature brushed stainless-steel grilles with brand logo etching and a discreet lighting effect. From electric drive systems through gull-wing doors to fabric outer skins – the concepts are always focused on the future and brimming with visionary potential. Concept cars serve a variety of purposes, whether they are conceived as design studies, to help develop and implement new technologies, or to visualise what form new production models will take. The standard Harman Kardon Surround Sound System delivers an excellent listening experience with a seven-band equalizer, eighteen speakers, 655 watts of audio power and sound adjustment based on the car’s dynamic performance level.
